Mathematical Modeling of Optical-Fiber Refractometric Device

چکیده
We present a ray-tracing application in the modeling of an optical detection element employed as a sensor of refractive index of surrounding fluids or gases. The detection element is a solid glass microstructure having a surface of the second order. We exploit the sensitivity of internal reflection of light on the element’s surface to the refractive index of the surrounding medium, operation near the critical angle of incidence, several internal reflections in series, and the focusing properties of the concave surface. We present the techniques employed in the numerical modeling of the detection element. These techniques permitted to reduce significantly the computing time and memory size necessary for accessing the operational characteristics of the detection element. Key-Words: Mathematical modeling, optical design software, numerical ray tracing, optical instrumentation, refractive index measurement, optoelectronic sensors.

A microfluidic refractometric sensor based on gratings in optical fibre microwires.
In this paper we investigate a novel method to manufacture gratings in optical fiber microwires and discuss their application to sensing. Gratings can be manufactured by wrapping an optical fiber microwire on a microstructured rod. This method avoids post-processing the thin optical fiber microwire and it has great flexibility: chirping can be realized by designing the air hole size and positio...
متن کاملAntiresonant guiding microstructured optical fibers for sensing applications
A novel refractometric sensor utilizing unique spectral properties of antiresonant-guiding microstructured optical fibers is proposed. The sensor operation is based on the wavelength shift of the transmission spectrum in response to the refractive index change of a sample loaded in the airholes of the microstructured optical fiber. Refractive index changes on the order of 0.1% can be detected u...
متن کاملDemonstration of a refractometric sensor based on an optical micro-fiber three-beam interferometer
With diameter close to the wavelength of the guided light and high index contrast between the fiber and the surrounding, an optical micro-fiber shows a variety of interesting waveguiding properties, including widely tailorable optical confinement, strong evanescent fields and waveguide dispersion. Among various micro-fiber applications, optical sensing has been attracting increasing research in...
متن کاملRefractive Index Measurement of Liquids Based on Microstructured Optical Fibers
This review is focused on microstructured optical fiber sensors developed in recent years for liquid RI sensing. The review is divided into three parts: the first section introduces a general view of the most relevant refractometric sensors that have been reported over the last thirty years. Section 2 discusses several microstructured optical fiber designs, namely, suspended-core fiber, photoni...
